Recreating Sonic's Lightning Speed Pass-By Effect Using After Effects

In this tutorial, we will show you how to create the lightning speed pass-by effect inspired by Sonic the Hedgehog using Adobe After Effects. Follow these steps to achieve this dynamic visual effect.

**Step 1: Prepare Your Footage**
  1. Film yourself running. Shooting at night can enhance the effect as light trails will stand out more. Use lamps to light up the scene if needed.
  2. Import your footage into Adobe After Effects and create a new composition.

**Step 2: Speed Up Your Footage**
  1. Drag your footage into the new composition.
  2. Go to **Layer** > **Time** > **Time Stretch** and adjust the stretch factor to speed up your footage. This will make it look like you're running at lightning speed.
  3. Trim the composition to your work area by setting the work area start and end points.

**Step 3: Duplicate and Blur Your Footage**
  1. Duplicate your footage layer by selecting it and pressing **Ctrl + D** (Windows) or **Cmd + D** (Mac).
  2. On the duplicated layer, go to **Effect** > **Blur & Sharpen** > **Directional Blur**. Set the blur direction to match the direction of your movement and adjust the blur length to create a motion blur effect.
  3. Adjust the opacity of the blurred layer to blend it with the original layer, creating a fast-moving effect.

**Step 4: Add Light Trails**
  1. Create a new solid layer for the light trails by going to **Layer** > **New** > **Solid**. Choose a bright color, such as blue or yellow, to mimic Sonic's lightning.
  2. Apply the **Saber** effect (if you have Video Copilot's Saber plugin) or **Glow** effect to the solid layer. Adjust the settings to create glowing light trails.
  3. Position and animate the light trails to follow your movement. Use keyframes to match the speed and direction of your running.

**Step 5: Add Additional Details**
  1. Enhance the effect by adding more details to the light trails, such as sparks or secondary glows. You can do this by duplicating the light trails layer and modifying the settings.
  2. Adjust the contrast, brightness, and colors of the light trails to make them look more dynamic and realistic.

**Step 6: Final Adjustments and Rendering**
  1. Review your composition and make any final adjustments to the speed, blur, and light trails.
  2. Once satisfied, render and export your composition by going to **Composition** > **Add to Render Queue**. Choose the appropriate settings for your final output.

By following these steps, you can recreate Sonic's lightning speed pass-by effect using Adobe After Effects. For a detailed, step-by-step guide, watch the full video tutorial.
